After an injury in 2007 and a year of physical rehabilitation and speech therapy, in 2008 at age 62, Stan took an early retirement and pursued the endeavor of reviewing movies, chatting with filmmakers, and writing motion picture industry articles.

In February 2010, Stan Robinson was chosen as one of the “20 Best Film Critics in America," as part of National CineMedia Networks’ national campaign. NCM.com

On being tagged with the movie or film 'critic' label, Stan is quick to add... "There's movie critics and movie reviewers.  I'm the latter. I don't get into aspects like its too short or too long, or it had flaws here or it lacked pacing there.  I pass along what I came away with when I see a movie, what was the essence of the theme and how it affected me.  Did it give me more to contemplate, or how it affected me emotionally, did it make me feel or think in a different light. Filmmakers are storytellers and I write about what I felt from seeing the story.  To say I would have shot a scene this way or that way is like viewing the 'Mona Lisa' painting by Leonardo da Vinci and saying I would have painted her with a frown instead of the ambiguity of her expression, how brazen is that!

When asked about his judging the work of filmmakers, Stan replies with a chuckle... "No group of filmmakers sit around with a 20 million dollar budget and decide, hey, let's just screw this up! The essence of what they wanted to present is there.  For various reasons, and in most cases beyond their control, it just didn't come together the way they wanted, but the essence is still there and that's what I hope to bring to my readers, what I came away with after viewing a movie, not pick it apart."

Among Stan's favorite movies for viewing are the smaller independent films... "My experience of working on a number of independent films throughout the years is that they are the real gems of filmmaking because we as cast and crew pour our hearts and souls into bringing them to the screen.  In the course of facing those adversities and limitations, magical things happen!"

And when the question of what genres of movies are his 'guilty pleasures'... "Its 'B' Sci-fi films', they're always grounded in a very plausible and sometimes outrageous premise with quite imaginative ways of working around familiar aspects like not enough funds for upscale special effects, or production design, or any number of budget restraints.  My favorite guilty pleasure is 'A Sound of Thunder', a grandiose effort with a very intriguing theme!"
